Record volume of Austrian goods handled in Port of Hamburg

30 March 2023
12 per cent increase - throughput of 6.3 million tonnes

Austria achieved a new record of goods handled in the Port of Hamburg with an increase of 12 per cent and a throughput of 6.3 million tonnes, a press release said Tuesday (March 21, 2023). "At just over 323,000 TEU, container throughput is also slightly up on last year," said Alexander Till, Representative of Hafen Hamburg Marketing Austria.

Positive development despite crises

This comes despite several global challenges. Till added: "We can proudly report that we were able to achieve a record year in all areas, even in the exceptionally challenging year caused by coronavirus and the Russian war of aggression." Most of the goods arriving in Hamburg are transported by rail. Around 146 weekly connections between Hamburg and Austria are now in place.

Port of Hamburg's key partner

Last year, Voestalpine AG imported around 2.9 million tonnes of iron ore and coal - an increase of 27 per cent - destined for Austria via the Port of Hamburg. A leading global steel and technology group, Voestalpine decided in 2019 to import some of its raw materials via Hamburg and is now among its key partners.
