HafenCity's Plot 72 To Take Shape

Mixed use planed with four-star hotel, student accommodation and freely financed housing on 21,000 square meters of above-ground gross floor area (GFA). Holiday Inn named as operator of the hotel

Another major construction project is taking shape in Hamburg’s HafenCity: at the southern end of the neighbourhood “Am Lohse Park”, directly across from the HafenCity University, ECE, Harmonia Real Estate and Student Services Hamburg have team up to develop plot 72 into a lively urban neighbourhood with an attractive mixed use with a hotel, student accommodation, and freely financed housing o 21,000 square metres of above-ground gross floor area (GFA). With the architectural competition concluded in late 2014, construction could commence in December 2015. Completion is scheduled for summer 2017.

Holiday Inn Hotel at HafenCity

In the invited, one-phase architectural competition with ten offices, kister scheithauer gross architekten und stadtplaner GmbH came out as winner for the Holiday Inn Hotel. It will implemented in the south of ‘building site 72’ as a full-service hotel with 267 rooms and a MICE area suitable for up to 300 people on a gross floor area of 11,515 square metres. The representative entrance to the hotel will be located at Überseeallee, and thus directly across from the HafenCity University and the new stop of the U4 underground line. A unique feature will be the hotel’s “Open lobby concept” that abolishes traditional boundaries between reception, lobby, restaurant, bar, lounge and business centre in favour of holistic interior design, a novelty for an hotel in Germany.

Park Apartments & Student Studios

Harmonia will be erecting 45 quality apartments with view of HafenCity’s green oasis, Lohsepark. The so-called Park Apartments with one or two bedrooms will be sized 50 to 100 square metres. On ground level, shops, cafés and other services required to make the neighbourhood a well-functioning, urban, and lively ones will be installed.

Next to HafenCity Universtiy (HCU), the Studierendenwerk Hamburg will construct 125 student studios as subsidized housing in accordance with the requirements of the IFB Hamburg. All studios will be fully furnished and custom-tailored to meet the demands and needs of students. All facilities to be shared by students will be located on ground level, including fitness room, quiet rooms for learning, and a bar area in oder to ensure to create an open community and ensure communication among the students residents and visitors.

Ten Architects Competed

The architectural competition was not an open one, but by invitation only. Among its ten participants, kister scheithauer gross Architeken and urban planners from Cologne were named winner for the construction of the hotel. KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten from Braunschweig won the contest both the residential units and the student studios.
