Since 2010, big delegations from Hamburg have attended the South by Southwest (SXSW) underway in Austin, Texas from March 9-18, 2018. Together with the Hamburg Music Business Association (IHM) and the Reeperbahn Festival, the city has invited creative and music companies to present Hamburg and it’s creative sector as an attractive economic location with many artists and musicians. The programme in Austin includes all kinds of networking and showcasing events for launching the Hanseatic creative scene on an international stage.
Hamburg’s innovative start-up scene at SXSW
Begun purely as a music festival in 1987 with merely 700 expert delegates, SXSW has long since morphed into the world’s most important digital and creative festival. Barack Obama, Edward Snowden and Mark Zuckerberg have visited in the past. Melinda Gates and Arnold Schwarzenegger are expected in 2018. The London-based Sceenic will be part of Hamburg’s delegation in the ‘SXSW Startup Village’ after the team completed an intense, six-month programme at the Next Media Accelerator (NMA) in Hamburg last year. The founders of the Hamburg-based Nordantech, Qualitize and Inspirient are also heading to Austin backed by the city of Hamburg and the Hamburg Startups initiative. Also heading off to SXSW are seven companies in the video and music, software and design sectors that have been selected for grants from the Ministry of Culture and Media and are backed by Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft.
Austin benefits Hamburg’s creative industries

It’s a great win for creative Hamburg that so many companies are heading off to present the city at SXSW.” Three Hamburg-based projects are among the finalists of the 21st SXSW – Innovation Awards in the “Student Innovation” category.
Hamburg events in Austin
The “Reeperbahn Hamburgers”, opposite the Convention Center is likely to become a meeting point for networking over north German dishes and snacks. This is where HamburgTexConncect becomes a matchmaking point for Hamburg-based companies with investors, reporters, journalists and U.S. multipliers who converge here at the centre of action on Digital Media Women Day (March 11) held in co-operation with the Digital Media Women e.V. (DMW) association. Events in the German Haus, at Hamburg’s stand and exclusive parties will focus entirely on digital issues backed by fischerAppelt and NEXT Conference. The Startups@Reeperbahn Pitch, staged by Hamburg Startups during the Reeperbahn Festival, is the only European pitching event and official partner of SXSW.
Reeperbahn Festival modelled on SXSW
The Reeperbahn Festival was originally founded and modelled on SXSW. This year, the Reeperbahn Festival and Music Cities Network will hold the Reeperbahn Hamburgers – Music Cities Mixer Reception on March 15 followed by a showcase in the Friends Bar featuring Hamburg’s techno marching band Meute. The rapper Ace Tee is one of many other north German musicians gearing up to perform in Austin.

Hamburg’s presentation in Texas is being funded by the city, Hamburg Marketing GmbH and the Ministry of Culture and Media. IHM and Reeperbahn Festival are responsible for interactive and music presentations. Together with Sanja Stankovic, of Hamburg Startups and Digital Media Women, they will curate Hamburg’s Interactive Programme at SXSW partnered by ANCHOR-Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award, Digital Media Women, fischerAppelt, Good School Hamburg, Hamburg Startups, NEXT Conference and Sutor Bank.
