The Hamburg-based start-up Pydro is among the top three finalists in the energy category of the international GreenTec Awards with a smart pressure management system for water pipe networks, according to a press release on January 23, 2017. Another Hamburg-based company, TUI Cruises, is a finalist in the sports category. Some 21 judges including representatives of media and commerce will choose the winners in each category to be announced during a ceremony on May 12, 2017 in Berlin. The GreenTec Awards, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, addresses initiatives, private persons, start-ups, medium-sized and big companies who deliver innovations in environmental protection and sustainability.
Saving CO2 and improving levels of pressure
Pydro won the pre-selection round with an intelligent turbine for remote-controlled, automatic water pipe networks that gauge water pressure and turn excess pressure into energy. The turbines are installed plug’n’play in the pipeline, reduce electricity costs and C02, improve pressure levels in the pipe and reduce pipe ruptures and water losses. Founded by Mulundu Sichone, Felix Müller und Michael Heuer, the Pydro team is backed by experts at the Startup Docks at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH). Müller said: “The GreenTec Award is probably the most famous prize for green technology by German firms of all sizes. We are a very young, hardware start-up and are naturally delighted to have beaten leading world companies.”
Platform for green technologies
A campaign by TUI Cruises focusing on sustainable diving and snorkelling is a finalist in the sports category which highlights creative projects and ideas for transferring the positive, physical impacts of the sport to the environment. TUI’s campaign targets passengers aboard the Mein Schiff fleet in the Caribbean and includes lessons at local diving schools.
The GreenTec Award brings representatives of commerce, science and celebrities together for the annual award ceremony to promote innovative, ecological endeavours and technology.
