Hamburg to host 24-hour Climathon in October

Climathon allows participants to develop digital climate protection solutions

Hamburg is gearing up to host its first 24-hour Climathon on October 25, 2019 from 12 am in the edel-optics arena at the Hamburg Towers. Participants will spend 24 hours working on digital ideas for climate protection. Small groups will programme software solutions or design ideas. Students, start-ups, hackers, residents of Hamburg and international guests can register online for the Climathon.

Lowering CO2 consumption and waste packaging

Participants will focus on how to make individual CO2 budgets measurable and clever solutions for avoiding waste packaging. Emphasis will also be on the best ways of marketing an idea and to gain as many fellow campaigners as possible in the process. “Climate protection is the number one topic at present. The opportunity for real leaps forward in climate policy is greater than ever – but so too is the urgency,” said Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment and Energy: “We need clever solutions and creative ideas for effective and socially accepted climate protection. The Climathon brings young people with such ideas together.” Coaches will help the 100 participants find solutions, which will be presented to a jury on October 26, 2019. The best teams will receive an award and can publish their results on #moinzukunft.

5,000 participants in 113 cities last year

Launched by the Climate-KIC network for climate-friendly innovation across Europe in 2015, the Climathon has been held on the last Friday in October ever since. The aim is to limit the consequences of climate change and to create climate-resistant communities through creative solutions. Last year, 5,000 people in 113 cities took part in the Climathon. Hamburg’s Impact HUB is organising the Climathon, which is being funded by the Ministry for the Environment as part of the #moinzukunft campaign and targeting more climate protection in everyday life.
