German government to fund Hanseatic energy projects

Four projects from Hamburg and metropolitan region qualify for funds

Four Hanseatic entries in the Reallabore der Energiewende have been earmarked for funds from the German Ministry of Economics (BMWI). They include the North German Real Laboratory – Competence Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CC4E) by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), the IW3 project (Integrierte WärmeWende Wilhelmsburg) by Hamburg Energie GmbH, Dow Stade (GreenMeOH) and ReWest (Reallabor Westküste100) by Raffinerie Heide GmbH. Sustainable energy technologies are to be tested in real conditions in laboratories and on an industrial scale.

Key step on way to a climate-friendly city

Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment and Energy, said: “The selection confirms Hamburg’s pioneering role in innovative energy system transformation projects.” The projects by Hamburg Energie and the Norddeutsche Reallabor have the potential to become leading examples of heat and energy system transformation for urban areas across Germany.”

Plans for a pilot project to heat households with geothermal energy are being laid in Wilhelmsburg. The HAW real laboratory focuses on research into sector coupling and hydrogen in a bid to set up NEW 4.0 on a large scale. An industrial power plant process is to be decarbonised and the CO2 produced used as part of the Dow Stade – GreenMeOH project. The West Coast 100 real laboratory focuses on using an electrolyser to convert electricity from wind to hydrogen to produce CO2-neutral fuel among others.

Focus on hydrogen and energy-optimized suburbs

A total of 90 consortia and 500 entrants had submitted proposals on sector coupling and heat transfer. Particular emphasis was on hydrogen and storage technologies as well as energy-optimised suburbs. Funds for the projects can now be requested.
