Social Democrats and Green Party Demand a German Maritime Research Centre to be Set Up in Hamburg

The factions of SPD and Green launched a parliamentary initiative to set up a German Maritime Research (DMFZ) in Hamburg

The factions of SPD and Green launched a parliamentary initiative to set up a German Maritime Research (DMFZ) in Hamburg. The centre will be needed to advance sustainability in shipbuilding and maritime industries, and to support maritime research in Germany, both parties say.

Showcasing Future Technologies

“Hamburg has the ambition to continue its development as a world port city of the maritime industry. With a German Maritime Research, Hamburg would be able to showcase the assets off LNG or other technologies of green shipping. The modernisation efforts along green visions currently taking place in ports and maritime industries offer great opportunities and allow to speed up the introduction of innovative solutions from research to market”, says Anjes Markas, chairman and spokesman for the port and economy of the Greens parliamentary group. “As a location for research, development and innovation, Hamburg offers ideal conditions for the German maritime research.”

Increased Commitment Necessary

Joachim Seeler, spokesman for port policy and Maritime Economy of the SPD parliamentary group, adds: “The maritime economy – and mainly shipbuilding, shipping, marine technology and offshore wind energy – is an innovative high-tech sector with significant potential for value creation. To secure Germany’s influence and market share in future, a greater commitment is needed. We need a central research organisation – similar to the German Centre for Aerospace – to secure the future of ‘Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries’. As one of the largest ports in Europe and an important R & D & location, Hamburg offers ideal conditions. “

With about 480,000 employees and an annual turnover of more than 50 billion euros, the maritime industry is a key industries for innovation and competitiveness in Germany. The existing “Center of Maritime Technologies” (CMT) is to be developed accordingly.
