Port congress clears way for Lower Elbe region

Talk of "Leitbild 2030" - increasing added value and quality of life take priority. Managers highlight reasons for choice of location

Representatives of business development agencies, entrepreneurs on both banks of the Elbe and politicians are to meet at the 6th Seehafen-Congress or seaport congress on November 8th, 2016 in the Hafen-Klub Hamburg to pave the way for further developing the Lower Elbe economic region. The Dithmarschen and Steinburg regions are particularly well represented this year. Volker Jahnke, one of the congress organisers for egeb: Wirtschaftsförderung, said: “Entire regions and not single cities count in international competition. Only strong partners with a constantly improving infrastructure can compete with cities overseas nowadays.”

Leitbild 2030 – Mission Concept 2030

The congress will focus mainly on the Mission Concept 2030 (Leitbild 2030) as part of “Transnational Regional Management for the Lower Elbe Economic Region” (Länderübergreifendes Regionalmanagement für den Wirtschaftsraum Unterelbe). The paper outlines targets for the region from Hamburg to the Elbe estuary. It foresees more intense co-operation among local representatives of commerce, developing industrial added value, the entire value chain as well as the quality of life. Plans are also being laid to promote joint external representation and certain unique selling points. Jahnke added: “Basically we wish to show how to make the entire region a more important and efficient industrial location in 2030.”

Reports on choice of location

Delegates will also discuss industrial settlements in the context of metropolitanisation. Managers will give talks on their choice of a location followed by panel discussions with local representatives. The congress will also focus on “Strong logistics for successful industrial region in an international context” in the hope of gaining more impetus for boosting the lower Elbe economic region, said Jahnke.

The congress is being organised by egeb: Wirtschaftsförderung, Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. and UMCO Umwelt Consult GmbH in co-operation with transnational regional management. Participants include Dithmarschen, egeb: Wirtschaftsförderung, Handelskammer Hamburg Service GmbH (HKS), Chamber of Commerce Flensburg, Chamber of Commerce Kiel, Chamber of Commerce for the Elbe-Weser region Projektentwicklung Stade GmbH & Co. KG, Wirtschaftsförderung Landkreis Stade GmbH.
