Hamburg aiming for world record-breaking connected driving

Free Nunav app available for intelligent driving during port celebrations

The City of Hamburg and the Graphmasters mobility start-up are aiming for a world record during this year’s Port Anniversary (May 10-12, 2019) Celebrations with over 1 million expected vistors amid huge volumes of traffic. To coincide with the start of celebrations on Friday, motorists are invited to use the free Nunav app, which links up drivers and guides them through traffic in am intelligent swarm. The world record will be monitored by the University of Hamburg and Germany’s official record institute as part of Hamburg’s ITS Strategy for intelligent transport systems.

Downloading app and taking part

The Nunav app is available free of charge for iOS and Android systems. It does not gather a user’s personal data and no registration is required. The app can be used for navigation after the attempted world record. The app calculates the live position of all vehicles in the swarm and links up participants with each other to avoid congestion i.e. collaborative routing. Daniel Stolba, Spokesperson for Graphmasters, said: “Science says that if only 1 or 2 per cent of cars are networked, traffic jams on roads are reduced by 18 per cent. On the other hand, conventional navigation apps work with so-called selfish routing, i.e. routes are not co-ordinated with other users causing traffic jams in the process.”

World record involving thousands

Hamburg now hopes to set a precedent in terms of logistics as it gears up to host the ITS World Congress in 2021. Thousands of motorists will be linked up in traffic. “This technology shows that all those who wish to be mobile in the city can benefit from intelligent traffic systems,” said Senator Michael Westhagemann, and President of the Ministry of Economics, Transport and Innovation. This is just one of many projects foreseen by Hamburg’s ITS Strategy to make urban transport safer, cleaner and more efficient.
