With Frank-Walter Steinmeier as the keynote speaker, the award gala of the prestigious media prize commenced in Hamburg on Friday night. “Free media are the basis of a vibrant democracy,” said German Foreign Minister. “When media are in crisis, a democratic society cannot remain indifferent”, Steinmeier said and told all editors-in-chief to recall the foundation of journalism: “quality, relevance and diversity”.
Tagesspiegel honoured as lead paper, SZ magazine as lead magazine
Berlin-based daily “Tagesspiegel” was named winner as “Lead Newspaper of the Year”. Also nominated was the Hamburg-based weekly “Die Zeit” along with the“Frankfurter Rundschau” and “Welt am Sonntag”. In the category of “Lead Magazine of the Year”, “SZ-Magazin” by “Süddeutsche Zeitung” was ranked first ahead of the Hamburg Food Magazine “Beef” by Gruner + Jahr. Bronze went to the Berlin fashion-magazine “Achtung” .
Photo of the year in Hamburg’s “Stern”
In the category “Photo of the Year”, Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier honoured Taslima Akhter from Bangladesh with the audience award. Inn their home country, the photographer had taken pictures of a couple after the collapse of a textile factory, thus reflecting the grievances. Her picture was published by the Hamburg gazette “Stern” in the no. 21/2014 issue. The prices in silver and bronze also went to the Hamburg-based weekly magazine. In the category “Portrait Photography”, the Hamburgbased “Zeit Magazine” secured silver and bronze. The magazine of the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” also won gold as “Visual Leader” and was honoured with gold in the “Illustration” category. In the “Cover of the year” category, silver was won by the Hamburg-based magazine brand eins for the title of “Monday if I could puke”. Gold went to SZ-Magazin Nr. 37, bronze again to Hamburg for the title of this year’s “Spiegel” no. 12 “Game Over”.
Laurels for Hamburg’s advertisers
Numerous prizes were also granted to Hamburg’s creative advertising industry. Stefan Kolle of KolleRebbe was honoured with gold as “Creative Leader 2014” . Silver was won by Scholz & Friends and the Hamburg agency of Jung von Matt for Edeka’s“Super Horny”, which also took home the bronze award for Vodafone’s “Add Power”.
Start-Up of the Year Also From Hamburg
Even in the digital world, the creative capital of Hamburg is the leader in Germany, the awards showed. In the start-up category, granted for the very first time this year, Protonet took home gold with his very secure mini-server.
