Hamburg’s fintechs raised a record EUR 236 million in 2017 and 2018, according to the nationwide Comdirect Fintech Hub Ranking 2018. Overall, Hamburg secured fourth place based on four factors: number of fintechs, start-ups, venture capital investments and rounds.
Fintechs from Hamburg raise EUR 236 million
The latest Comdirect Fintech study includes 67 fintechs (including proptechs) 12 of which were founded between 2017 and 2018. Hamburg ranked fourth followed by Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. The Elbe city proved particularly convincing in terms of venture capital investments. During 12 financing rounds, Hamburg-based fintechs raised a total of EUR 236 million in venture capital in 2017 and 2018 (as of end September) compared to EUR 213 million in 2016/2017. Only in Berlin did more money flow to German financial start-ups.
International focus of Fintech Agency Hamburg
Since mid October 2017, the Fintech Agency Hamburg has been helping international fintechs to launch on the German and especially the Hamburg market. Companies that already have proof-of-concept in their home markets, funding and software development teams will be accompanied through the process by a contact person networked in Hamburg’s financial sector. The first fintech co-working space is due to open in HafenCity in early January 2019.
