Hamburg App Contest Open 'Til 19 December

Independent developers, start-ups, new talents and established IT companies are asked to submit their best new app or app idea by 19 December 2014

“Your App for Hamburg” is the motto of the Hamburg App Contest launched by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce in co-operation with Hamburg Marketing GmbH, der ottogroup, pixelpark, the Hamburg weekly “Die Zeit”, and Dr. Johannes. When launching its “Hamburg 2030” strategy four years ago, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce has been emphasising the potential and relevance of app development. One of the ten flagship projects appointed by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is thus the goal to turn Hamburg into a stronghold of mobile applications.

Two Musts: Economic and Local Relevance

“App developments have a great economic potential. The EU expects employment in this sector to quadruple in the next four years to just under five million people”, says Hans-Jörg Schmidt-Trenz, general director of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. The chamber’s goal: to make Hamburg the stronghold of mobile applications, and thus to increase employment. All entries to the competition must have both local, i.e. Hamburg-related, and be of economic relevance. This can be ensured, for example, by using records of the urban open-data portal. Those not able to develop apps can also apply with ideas for apps. Total prize money amounts to more than 28,000 euro.

Key Driver in E-Commerce

“Apps are becoming increaslingly important in our lives. In online trading, they are a key driver of the so-called Everywhere Commerce ‘, that currently drives an entire industry. With our commitment to the App Contest Hamburg we want to promote this exciting development in the IT sector, while simultaneously advancing Hamburg as a hotspot of media, innovation and IT, “said Dr. Lars Finger, Director of E-Commerce Competence Center of Otto Group and jury member. ottogroup also contributes 10,000 euro of prize money.

The best entries will be selected by a jury of experts. Patron of the competition is Hamburg’s First Mayor Olaf Scholz. The contest is support by Hamburg’s IT industry.
