Hamburg has reached the round of 12 finalists for the “European Capital of Innovation Award (iCapital Award) after competing for the first time last year, when it ranked among the top six leading innovative cities. This year’s top 12 nominees include Antwerp, Bilbao, Bologna, Dortmund, Glasgow, London and Rotterdam. The top six finalists will be announced in mid September.
Exchange among innovative cities
“This latest nomination shows that we are on the right track to actively and sustainably shaping the growth of our city with our citizens. This strengthens our position and profile in Hamburg as a city innovation,” said Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, CEO of Hamburg Marketing GmbH. “The iCapital Award offers an ideal environment not only for competing with the most innovative cities in Europe, but also to further expand the exchange among the cities.”
In 2019, the application focuses on promoting responsible, innovative projects that aim to benefit citizens so that people can take part in mobility, research and digitisation and help prepare society for new challenges.
Presentation in Brussels
The European Commission has awarded the prize worth EUR 1million annually since 2014. The application requires cities to show how they implement innovative solutions to social challenges. These solutions can be completed and ongoing, provided that they have been implemented in the year of application. A panel of independent experts from all over Europe will choose the prizewinner. The award will be presented during the EU Research & Innovation Days on September 25, 2019 in Brussels. Each of the five runners-up will receive EUR 100,000 in prize money.
