Green light for VR Prototyping Lab

Project brings students and Hamburg media companies together for experiments with VR and prototypes

The VR Prototyping Lab by nextMedia.Hamburg and nextReality.Hamburg in the VR Transfercenter in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt launched in late October with a kick-off barcamp. Participating students from the University of Hamburg and the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) met with Bauer Xcel Media, SPIEGEL Verlag and FOODBOOM to discuss ideas for projects and formed permanent working groups. Now, usable VR prototypes are to be developed for companies in Hamburg over the next university term.

Exchanging and experimenting

“We have started an exciting experiment with the VR Prototyping Lab and want to explore the possibilities of VR as a media innovation in concrete cases,” said Nyasha Busse, project manager at nextMedia.Hamburg. “Everyone benefits from the project: the students by exchanging experiences and contacts to innovative media companies and the companies by daring something and experimenting with VR outside the usual internal structures. We want knowledge to be exchanged and prototypes to emerge from the project, encouraging companies to experiment more.”

Developing prototypes

To begin with, the students developed ideas and approaches for possible prototypes in open brainstorming sessions. Three permanent working groups will continue to develop these prototypes for their respective partner companies during the 2018/2019 winter semester. The nextReality.Hamburg’s VR experts will act as mentors for the students throughout the entire project.
