The Port of Hamburg notched up record rail throughput to Austria in 2020 with tonnage of 4.45 million tons – an increase of 2 per cent over 2019, Hafen Hamburg Marketing e. V. announced Friday (April 9, 2021). The results make 2020 the most successful year since records began in the 1950s. The Port of Hamburg is one of Austria’s key hubs for importing and exporting goods worldwide.

Positive container sector

"The trustful co-operation between Austrian companies and the Port of Hamburg was boosted during the pandemic," said Alexander Till, representative of Hafen Hamburg Marketing in Vienna. Last year alone, the Austrian technology group, Voestalpinem imported 1.3 million tons of ore via the Hansaport seaport terminal in Hamburg. Around 90 trains per week connect the port with the Alpine republic. During a round trip, exports are returned to Hamburg in containers aboard slightly modified waggons. A total of 301,000 TEU containers (twenty-foot standard containers) for Austria's domestic and export trade in 2020 reflect the good Hanseatic-Austrian business links. The result proved the second-best in the  Port of Hamburg’s history.
