An international hotel for congresses is to be built in HafenCity’s Quartier Elbbrücken to complement hotels in the sector and help secure mid-sized congresses, HafenCity Hamburg GmbH announced Tuesday (July 11, 2017). The hotel is to be built by the ECE Projektmanagement G.m.b.H. & Co. KG with HSP Hamburg Invest GmbH. Talks with international hotel operators are already underway. Tenders will be issued to architects in early 2018 when the contract has been signed. The envisaged deadline for completion is spring 2021.
Boosting Hamburg as a centre of congresses
Florian Sauer, Managing Director OTI Development & Leasing, ECE: “We are really delighted that we have been able to substantiate the plans for our congress hotel in such a prominent place and which is ideally linked to transport. We have agreed on demands about size and equipping the hotel in the early planning phase with the Hamburg Business Development Corporation (HWF) and Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH among others. This will ensure that the project is a sensible enhancement to existing venues and will help strengthen Hamburg overall as a congress centre.”
“Locating an international hotel there has long since been part of our efforts. We are delighted to have agreed on this location. The refurbished CCH and the new hotel in HafenCity allows Hamburg to offer organisers two venues, which are perfectly linked to public transport, for top-class congress,” said Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of HWF and Chairman of the Managing Board of Hamburg Marketing GmbH. The new hotel is a milestone for Hamburg, according to an analysis of potential.
Large conference room and office spaces
The new four to five-star hotel will have a minimum of 500 rooms and a large conference room for up to 1,300 guests. Office spaces may also be provided to complement the hotel and congress area. The Quartier Elbbrücken location will soon be linked to public underground trains and fast-train lines – a mere two stops from Hamburg’s main railway station.
The Quartier Elbbrücken in the east of HafenCity has 560,000 square metres (gross) of floor space and is also the largest in the district. The new hotel is the fourth most important commercial property there. Prof. Juergen Bruns-Berentelg, Managing Director of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, said: “The congress hotel adds an important quality to the large corporate location of Elbbrückenquartier with many jobs. A meeting point is being created; a place where experts can exchange ideas as well as a nationally and internationally important communication bridge for Hamburg.”
