German government earmarks EUR 8 million in funding
Hamburg has been announced as host city of the UITP Global Public Transport Summit from June 15-18, 2025 focusing on sustainable urban mobility. Delegates from 40 countries are expected at the world's largest congress of this kind. The German government has announced EUR 8 million in funds to stage the congress in both 2025 and 2027 as part of a Declaration of Intent to make Hamburg a "Metropolitan Model Region of Mobility" signed last December. The long-term goal is to develop a new, digitialised urban mobility system that can be transferred to other regions.
Around 10,000 autonomous vehicles by 2030
"The choice as venue for the world's largest public transport congress confirms Germany's pioneering role in innovative mobility solutions," said Dr Volker Wissing, German Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport. "We can show the world from Hamburg that Germany has its finger on the pulse when it comes to intelligent on-demand transport, alternative drives or energy-efficient technologies." Dr Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport, remarked: "UITP will allow us to initiate projects that will improve transport mobility in our city permanently and make it more digital and even more accessible for people." Around 10,000 autonomous vehicles will be on roads across Hamburg by 2030, creating a new digital on-demand transport service and for rural areas as well.
