Record 2,847 new business registrations in first half of 2023, says Statistics Office North - highest since 2008

A record 2,847 new businesses were set up in the first half of 2023 across Hamburg, according to Statistics Office North. The figures are the highest since 2008 and represent an increase of 18 per cent over the same period in 2022. However,  1,279 companies ceased business - a rise of 13 per cent over last year. Yet, the number of new businesses surpassed the number of closures by 1,568.

New record for start-ups 

Around 1.5 companies per 1,000 inhabitants were founded in the first half of 2023. The highest number of start-ups were set up in central Hamburg at a rate of 4.2 and accounting for a rise of over 60 per cent in just one year. The suburbs of Harburg and Eimsbüttel followed with an increase of 16 and 13 per cent respectively over the first half of 2022. The least number of businesses were registered in Bergedorf, where the start-up rate was 0.6 or 21.4 per cent lower than in the same period last year.
