Lufthansa Technik and LG set up joint venture

Focus on developing aircraft displays and systems in Hamburg

Lufthansa Technik AG and LG Electronics (LG) will jointly develop, produce and market LG’s innovative OLED displays for commercial airplane cabins, the companies announced Thursday (October 25, 2018). The new venture will be based in Hamburg and will start operations in the first half of 2019.

New markets for on-board applications

The joint venture will combine LG’s advanced, lightweight and flexible OLED display technology with Lufthansa Technik’s aviation expertise to open up new markets for on-board aircraft applications such as welcome aboard screens and interior linings. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval.

Innovative cabin products

The Lufthansa Technik Group has around 35 subsidiaries and associated companies making it one of the world’s leading providers of aircraft technology services, including innovative cabin products. More than 25,000 employees work for the internationally certified maintenance, manufacturing and development organization. Commenting on the deal, Dr. Johannes Bussmann, chairman of Lufthansa Technik’s executive board, said: “Both partners contribute a globally recognized reputation in their respective business areas to create a new flying experience for the passengers.”

LG Electronics, Inc. is a global leader in consumer electronics, mobile communications and home appliances. The company has over 100 branches worldwide. Last year, LG earned consolidated sales of USD 55.4 billion. A delighted Kwon Soon-hwang, President of LG’s Business-to-Business Company, remarked: “We are very excited to be joining hands with Lufthansa Technik to expand the reach of LG’s innovative consumer electronic technologies to commercial aircrafts.”
