Every third passenger travels for professional reasons

On average, passengers including frequent flyers at Hamburg Airport take to the skies nine times per year

More than one in four passengers book a flight to visit friends and relatives. Flights for holiday reasons are no longer the most frequent reason for a flight, according to a survey of flight passengers in the first half of 2018. Professional appointments, i.e. business appointments, visits to trade fairs and other professional occasions account for 33.6 per cent or 0.6 percentage points less than in the previous year.

Visiting friends and relatives popular

On average, passengers including frequent flyers at Hamburg Airport take to the skies nine times per year. However, two thirds of passengers travel privately. Visits to friends and relatives are becoming increasingly important and account for 26.9 per cent – an increase of 2.6 percentage points over the previous year and a new high. Such trips are the most frequent reason for travelling. This trend becomes even clearer in terms of the the long-term development: In 2010, the share of those who flew to visit friends and relatives came to 19.4 per cent.

Representative passenger survey

Relaxing holidays (26.7 per cent) and city breaks (8.3 per cent) are further reasons for a private flight, but lost popularity in the first half of 2018. The figures are based on a passenger survey conducted by Hamburg Airport in the first half of 2018, for which 9,640 interviews were conducted among passengers at the airport between January 1-June 30, 2018.
