Olympus celebrates 50-year anniversary in Hamburg

In 1963, Olympus started activities in Hamburg with three employees. Today, 1,800 staff make Olympus Hamburg‘s largest Japanese employer.

To celebrate the 50-year anniversary in Hamburg, the company will recruit further 200 staff, i.e. engineers, technicians, sales managers and clerks. To many people, Olympus is mainly known as a manufacturer of cameras. Only a few are aware that Olympus is also world leader in the development of fixed and mobile endoscopic devices used in the examination of the digestive tract. This business division lies in the hands of Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe, uniting Olympus Winter & Ibe GmbH, Celon AG and Olympus Medical Products Czech under its roof since 2012. The company bundles activities in medical applications with a promising future such as minimally invasive surgery and high-frequency surgery, i. e. electro surgery. In 2012, the umbrella brand enjoyed a double digit growth. Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe employs 1,100 staff in Germany, the UK, and the Czech Republic, with 750 working in Hamburg. The use of its innovative medical equipment is taught in two Olympus training centres in Hamburg. Medical technology today accounts for 40 per cent of group sales. Cameras only cover 20 per cent of the business.
