Hamburg's wholesale market wins "Ökoprofit" award

Investments saving energy and lowering pollution

The Hamburg wholesale market has won the 2019 eco award “Ökoprofit-Betrieb”, a press release said Monday (February 18, 2019). The market has saved energy by investing in refurbished systems and using LED lights. The German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce are also taking part in the Ökoprofit programme or Ökologisches Projekt Für Integrierte UmweltTechnik and are in contact with the wholesale market.

Lower use of resources

Ökoprofit is a consulting system for ecological optimization. The consultancy programme helps companies and institutions to achieve a practicable environmental management system. Around 1.5 million tonnes of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers are handled every year in Hamburg’s wholesale market. More than 5,000 retailers and restaurateurs regularly buy their fresh produce there.
