During the so-called “sunrise period” from July 14 to August 13, only holders of registered trademarks can register their domains. “From 27 August onwards, all residents, companies and clubs in Hamburg and the metropolitan region will have the opportunity to register new Internet addresses like http://www.meinefirma.hamburg or http://www.meinname.hamburg”, announced the Hamburg Top -Level-Domain GmbH as operator of the new domain extension.
As the new domain is descriptive, and no longer a cryptic abbreviations like .org or .com, it will allow short, intuitive domains that are highly relevant for the communication and search engine placement,” says Oliver Süme, who founded the operating company together with other partners in 2007. Hamburg welcomes the launch. Carsten Brosda, representative of the Senate for the media, said: “With the new Hamburg domain Internet address, citizens and businesses in the metropolitan region of Hamburg are given the chance to digitally identify with their home town.”
Fielmann and Beiersdorf already registered
Trademark holders can use the privileged “sunrise period” to register a domain with their name in combination with the Hamburg domain. This requires to register the brands at a special trademark database. Called Trademark Clearinghouse, it was established for the protection of trademarks under the new domain extensions. According to Olivers Süme, large Hamburger companies such as Fielmann and Beiersdorf have already registered their companies with the new domain.
30 to 60 euro per year
Small and medium-sized enterprises are particularly advised to register heir most important brands in the Trademark Clearinghouse to maintain their registration opportunities,” said Oliver Süme. “In the second registration phase, it can then be quickly granted the new Hamburg domain extension, which will be sold along the lines first come, first served. The purchase of the domain will cost 30 to 60 euro per year.
