With Helmut Schmidt, one of the most respected post-war politicians has left the world. Born in Hamburg on 23 December 1918, the graduate of economics first made a name by successfully handling Hamburg’s 1962 disastrous flooding as the city state’s first minister of the interior. In 1974, Schmidt succeeded Willy Brandt as German chancellor, a position held until 1982 despite political challenges such as the oil crisis and Mogadischu. Since 1983 Helmut Schmidt, has been holding the position of co-publisher of the German weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” that honours the internationally acclaimed SPD politician in this obituary.
