Some 29 companies are to receive certificates or Hamburg Family Seals as the city’s most family-friendly companies Friday (September 9th) in the Evangelischen Stiftung Alsterdorf. So far, a total of 314 companies have successfully undergone the certification procedure by the Hamburg Allianz for Families, an initiative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Crafts.

Hamburg Alliance for Families
Since 2007, the Hamburg Alliance for Families has distinguished SMEs that go to special efforts to reconcile work and family life for their staff. The measures offered by such firms range from flexible working hours, individual part-time work models, programmes for staying in contact with a company during parental leave and re-entering the firm as well as job sharing models and at executive level also. Margret Tourbier-Stretz, Manger of the Hamburg Alliance for Families, said: “We look at the challenges facing the respective company and how creatively and flexibly they have met them.” The firms are examined every two years.

Meanwhile, more and more Hamburg-based companies are developing intelligent concepts for work-life balance. In June, the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) won first prize in a competition run by the Ministry for Families, Senior Citizens, Women and Youths as Germany’s most family-friendly company. The award was achieved in the “Large Company” category (over 1,000 employees) in the “Success Factor Family”. The honour came with a cash prize of EUR 5,000 and was presented in the Berliner Congress Center. More than 10,000 staff in Hamburg’s biggest hospital look after nearly 400,000 patients. Manuela Schwesig, German Minister for Families said: “We are honouring the UKE as a model company in the health sector and one that shows that family and working life are compatible.” She added: “Many mothers and fathers want to share professional and family tasks in a partner-like way. Families and employers benefit when firms adjust to this wish. That’s why I and economic associations and trade unions want to ensure that family-friendliness becomes a success factor.”
Family-friendly commitment proving worthwhile
All those involved benefit from reconciling work and family life. The cost of family-friendly measures for a company are balanced out by the benefits for employers, studies have shown repeatedly. The image of a company improves. The level of satisfaction, motivation and productivity in the workforce increases and the amount of sick-leave decreases and staff return faster from parental leave and feel closer connected to the company.
