Last year, the number of foundations based in Hamburg rose to 1,302. The Elbe city supersedes Munich by nearly 500 foundations. The second-placed Bavarian capital is home to 871 foundations. Berlin follows third with 819 foundations. The total assets of Hamburg‘s foundations rose to 7.8 billion euro, with 33 billion euro contributed by 2013‘s newly founded foundations.
Key task of Hamburg‘s newly found foundations is the promotion of youth (17%) ahead of Science / Research and Arts / Culture / Heritage (15% each). Further twelve per cent are involved in environmental and nature protection, nine per cent call health care their central purpose. Hamburg‘s foundation system has a long tradition, with first beginnings reaching back to the 12th century, i.e. the middle ages.
