Hamburg Showcases Landmark Projects at MIPIM 2016

From 15 to 18 March 2016, Hamburg will be promoting itself to international investors with its new concert hall and exciting developments in the east

The world’s largest real estate fair MIPIM in Cannes, France will be the stage for two new hallmark projects: the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and the new industrial site of Billbrook/Rothenburgsort.

Hamburg’s New Jewel

Already today an unparalleled architectural icon, the The Elbphilharmonie will officially open on 17 January. However, visitors of MIPIM will be able to catch first glimpses and gain insight of Hamburg’s new concert hall. The Hanseatic city continues to be one of Europe’s most attractive markets: most recently, the city scored top positions in various international investors’ rankings. In concert with the neighbouring HafenCity Hamburg project and other projects, the Elbphilharmonie represents Hamburg’s urban development strategy “More City in New Places” – which will also be this year’s motto for Hamburg’s presentation at the MIPIM.

Particularly Promising Destination

The presentation of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in Cannes also reflects the latest figures, which confirm that Hamburg is a particularly promising destination for the real estate industry. In its global analysis from last December, the international real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle also listed Hamburg in its “New World Cities” category as one of three German cities besides Berlin and Munich. Last but not least, Hamburg was ranked in second place just after Berlin in the latest ranking on Europe’s hottest locations for real estate investments conducted jointly by PwC and the Urban Land Institute. The Joint Hamburg Pavilion at MIPIM will provide insights into the strategy of this success story and to meet some of the most important stakeholders from the Hamburg Metropolitan Region.

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg: Inauguration in January 2017

Exceptional location, innovative architecture, overwhelming sound, and programmatic vision – the Elbphilharmonie will take Hamburg’s cultural scene to new levels. Its impressive silhouette has already become Hamburg’s new icon. The spectacular concert hall will be officially inaugurated on 11–12 January 2017. Situated in the heart of Hamburg’s port, it serves as a link between the modern maritime architecture of the HafenCity Hamburg, Europe’s largest inner-city development project, and the historic brick buildings of the Speicherstadt warehouse district, Hamburg’s UNESCO world heritage site. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Elbphilharmonie building rests on 1,700 reinforced concrete piles in the Elbe stream, incorporating three concert halls, a hotel (operated by Westin Hotels & Resorts), 45 exclusive apartments, and the Plaza viewing platform. Extending over 4,000 square metres at 37 metres above sea level, it offers a 360° panoramic view of the city.

New Opportunities For International Investors

From Elbephilharmonie’s viewing platform, Hamburg’s new exciting perspectives in the east are within reach. Following the expansion of its inner city through the HafenCity urban development project, the revitalisation of the Elbe islands and Harburg’s inner port through the “Leap across the Elbe“ strategy, a third major development project will now bring Hamburg’s eastern districts closer to the city. Within the framework of the concept “Stromaufwärts an Elbe and Bille”, the industrial suburb of Billbrook will also be subject to modernisation. The debate on Billbrook’s development prospects is currently in full swing. The economic potential of the area is to be further strengthened in order to create modern and sustainable jobs. By highlighting their profile and by improving the quality of life, the industrial quarters of Rothenburgsort and Billbrook are to be transformed into magnets for modern industrial enterprises.

In 2015, international investors accounted for 56% of transaction volumes, thus passing the 50% mark for the very first time. Meanwhile, foreign investment is twice as high as on the five-year average. International players invested some 2.37 billion euro, while German agents accounted for 1.87 billion euro. This fact not only demonstrates the attractiveness of the Hamburg real estate market, but also clearly shows that Hamburg’s longstanding presence at leading real estate fairs such as MIPIM and EXPO REAL is bearing fruit. In the latest ranking by PwC and the Urban Land Institute on Europe’s top spots for international property investment, Hamburg is ranked second after Berlin. Dublin, Madrid, and Copenhagen follow in ranks three to five.
