StadtRad Hamburg reached 3 million rides in 2016

Climate protection, clean air and noise reduction - new record indicates multifaceted trend

StadtRad Hamburg broke the 3 million mark on December 23, 2016, according to the Economic Authority. Frank Horch, Senator for Economics, said: “The strong use of red bicycles goes a considerable way towards strengthening bicycle traffic and has a positive effect in terms of climate protection, keeping air clean and reducing noise in Hamburg.” The bicycle company is now a fixed part of transport in Hamburg and makes an important contribution to raising the share of bicycles in the overall traffic volume.

Expansion targets surpassed

Around 13 million rides have been recorded since its launch in July 2009. StadtRad is used by around 395,000 customers and counts among the most successful systems of its kind in Germany. StadtRad Hamburg has 206 hire stations and 2,450 bicycles. The positive feedback in Hamburg has prompted expansions. Now 78 new stations up from 70 have been planned for the third and fourth phase through co-operations with various firms. StadtRad Hamburg will have has thus concluded expansions before the contract ends on December 31, 2018. In 2017, new stations will be added at (U) Klosterstern underground station, Mundsburger Damm/Papenhuder Str., Fuhlsbüttler Str./Piazzetta and the (U) Wandsbek-Gartenstadt underground station following roadworks.

Deutsche Bahn is responsible for operating StadtRad on behalf of the Free and Hanse City of Hamburg. A team of 29 staff are responsible for maintenance, repair and provision of the bicycles in Hamburg.
