Rising passenger numbers, less flight activity at Hamburg Airport

G20 summit and bad storms posed huge challenges to airport in July

Around 1.76 million passengers flew to and from Hamburg in July – a rise of 8.6 per cent over July 2016, according to Hamburg Airport’s monthly report. Air activity decreased 1.3 per cent last month meaning capacities aboard modern aircraft are being used more efficiently. Business is still brisk at Hamburg Airport as many families are going on summer holidays.

Bad storms impact flight traffic

Bad storms across Europe impacted flight traffic last month. Airlines at Hamburg Airport made use of late arrival rulings that allow traffic between 11 pm and midnight. Around 22 flights took off or arrived at the hour on July 19, 2017. The environmental authority gave exceptional permission for three flights after midnight.

Regular air flights despite G20 summit

The G20 summit in early July saw 100 special flights arrive and take off from Hamburg Airport parallel to regular flight traffic. An “airport within an airport” had been created to manage the extra burden. No restrictions or significant impediments occurred in regular flight traffic. During the summit, over 1,260 flights were recorded and only 22 delayed flights between 10 pm and 11 pm. A total of 13 delayed flights were processed within 15 minutes.
