Record number of cruise ships arrive in Hamburg

Cruise Gate Hamburg presents latest figures. Two-digit growth expected in 2017

This year is proving a record for the Hamburg cruise market with 170 cruise ship calls recorded in 2016 over 153 in 2015 and more than 700,000 passengers over 520,000 last year, Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH (CGH) disclosed Tuesday (September 13th). CGH, a fully owned subsidiary of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), has been operating all three of Hamburg’s cruise centres in Altona, HafenCity and Steinwerder since early 2016.

Two-digit growth expected in 2017

Sacha Rougier, Managing Director of CGH, said: “Since the inauguration of the Cruise Center Steinwerder in June last year, we have perfected our service to very large cruise ships in Hamburg and demonstrated that we are excellently placed both in terms of technical equipment and capacities.”

Until now, 90 cruise ships have called at the Cruise Center Steinwerder with a turnaround of over 530,000 passengers. Rougier noted: “We are currently working on further improving the accessibility of the Cruise Center Steinwerder by public transport.” CGH expects increased figures in 2017. She added: “Our current plans provide for a double-digit percentage growth in passenger numbers.”

Next year, cruise highlights are likely to include maiden calls by Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Joy, Mein Schiff 6, Independence OTS, MSC Preziosa and Silver Wind.
