Hamburg’s city centre becomes a sea of lights, wooden huts with all kinds of wares, delicacies and delicious aromas every year when Christmas markets open. Around 6 million visitors flock to 16 markets crucial to the over-the-counter retail sector in Advent. Apart from real tourist draws like the market in front of Hamburg’s City Hall or the “Weiße Zauber” on Jungfernstieg, many other interesting Christmas bazaars can be found in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Rambling around historic Lübeck
The Christmas market in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Lübeck, has been held since 1648, and is set against an impressive backdrop. It boasts select handcrafts, rustic stalls in addition to several other markets. The Christmas Wonderworld on Obertrave or the maritime Christmas market on Koberg also entice visitors. The markets have been underway since November 21, 2016 and continue until December 30, 2016.
Mulled wine and wicker beach chairs
The castle in Fehmarn has a cosy island feel and the Burger Market has been awash with lights every year since 2013. A huge Christmas tree can be spotted amid Scandinavian stalls with all kinds of handcrafts and delicacies. Guests are entertained with live music, open-air movies and children’s events. The market opened on November 24 and continues until December 30, 2016.
Wismar goes Scandinavian
Swedish-style Christmas huts can be found on Wismar’s historic market square with all kinds of delicacies, decorations for trees as well as handmade toys and candles. An entertainment programme unfolds every Sunday in Advent. Santa Claus arrives on a ship, docks in the old port and whooshes to the square with his huge entourage to the delight of young and old. The Wismar Christmas market opened on November 21 and continues until December 21, 2016.
Poffertjes and handcrafts
All kinds of grilled delicacies, mulled wine and Poffertjes – small Dutch-style pancakes – are available at the Christmas market in Mölln or the home of the famous jester Till Eulenspiegel in the Duchy of Lauenburg. Jewellery, all kinds of Christmas wares and decorations are available in the historic Town Hall. The market opened on November 25 and visitors can enjoy it until December 18, 2016.
Christmas market and gnomes’ forest
Bad Schwartau gnomes’ forest is one of Germany’s most unique Christmas attractions and has been a highlight of festivities for over 30 years The artist Rolf Kirsten has created over 130 mobile little gnomes in 25 individual huts. The Christmas market and the gnome’s forest are open from November 21 to December 26, 2016.
Gut Pronstorf on the edge of Holstein Switzerland has held a Christmas market outside the baroque manor house for over 25 years. Artists sell all kinds of glass, ceramic, wood and cardboard wares and other stalls sell all kinds of natural goods. The Gut Pronstorf market opens on every weekend in Advent.
Attractions in Lüneburg
The Christmas Market in Lüneburg’s Town Hall is a real attraction with a nostalgic children’s roundabout in the historic centre. Another market has been set up outside the St. Johannes Church. Both are open until December 23, 2016.
Stader Altstadt celebrating 50th anniversary
Stader’s Christmas market is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Lucia, the Swedish Queen of Light, the brass band and the children’s Christmas show are just some of the highlights. Santa Claus visits in the afternoons and has sacks and sacks full of sweet gifts for guests.
