Ranking: University of Hamburg scores on sustainability

University in 60th place on international "Impact University Ranking 2019"

Britain’s Times Higher Education (THE) magazine has ranked the University of Hamburg among the top 60 universities in the Impact University Ranking 2019 in terms of gender equality (rank 25), high-quality education (rank 29), health and well-being (rank 51). The magazine ranked 450 universities from over 75 countries based on research and teaching reputation. The University of Hamburg is the only German university to make it into the top 60 this year.

Sustainable Development Goals

The benchmark of the annual ranking is the influence of a university on society, based on the successful implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 goals foresee sustainable development on the economic, social and environmental levels. At the University of Hamburg, the goals serve to convey the essence of sustainable development. “We have, for instance, given sponsorships to all 17 SDGs among researchers. The university has also developed online maps for sustainability in research, teaching, administration and infrastructure, in which all projects are related to one or more SDGs,” said Prof. Dr. Bassen from the Competence Centre Sustainable University (KNU).

Above-average share of female professors

In 1985, the first directive on gender equality was drawn at the University of Hamburg. The university now has an above-average proportion of female professors or 34 per cent, according to Dr. Paschke-Kratzin, who is responsible for equal opportunities. The University of Hamburg ranked 135th in the overall World University Ranking 2019.
