Around 2,600 new and more comfortable city bikes will be on roads in Hamburg from February 1, 2019. Developed by Deutsche Bahn, the bikes offer more comforts such as a low-level entry and a control unit on the handlebars. Around 2,450 older bicycles will be taken off the road in January. Stadtrad Hamburg will not be available for use from January 2-31, 2019.
Standards for modern transport
The bicycles will undergo certain changes in future such as a control display on the handlebars and a legible saddle height. The fleet will also be expanded to 4,500 bicycles over the next five years. The number of stations will also be increased from 222 to 350 in the same period. Some 20 electrically-operated cargo bikes will follow from April 2019.
New prices apply from 2019. The first 30 minutes will still be free of charge. However, the minute prices will increase slightly from the 31st minute – in the normal tariff from 8 to 10 cents/minute and in the reduced tariff from 6 to 8 cents/minute. An annual fee of EUR 5 is being introduced to increase and expand the system in future. Deutsche Bahn will waive the annual fee for existing customers in the first year.
