Public transport to be further expanded by line extension of underground services

Ceremonial ground-breaking for the extension of the U4 service to the Elbe bridges • completion by 2018

“Elbe bridges in sight“ was the motto at the ground-breaking ceremony for the extension of the new underground line U4. Starting at the current end of the line at HafenCity University station, the 1.3 km line extension to the Elbe bridges will provide HafenCity‘s new Eastern office and residential areas with a fast and reliable access to Hamburg‘s inner city.

The U4 extension is divided into three stages. First of all, a sweeper and carriage sidings for the underground trains will be built at HafenCity University station. From there, the new service will continue to travel underground for roughly one kilometre, before continuing above the ground on a trough structure to reach its final destination, the Elbe bridges.

Tube operator Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HHA) will invest some 180 million euro into the extension of rail tracks and the construction of new stations. First trains are to travel by 2018.
