Port Network Of Elbe Lateral Canal Expands Co-Operation

The three ports of Lüneburg Uelzen and Wittingen co-operated in marketing and distribution. Joint Internet platform

“Three ports -one association” is the claim of the new union formed by the three inland ports of Lüneburg, Uelzen, and Wittingen managed by Süderelbe AG. “We want to render the port ready for competition,” said JürgenMarkwardt, Mayor of Uelzen, at presentation of the new association.

Joint Internet Platform

In 2014, more than ten million tonnes of freight were moved by barge on the Elbe Lateral Canal, with all three ports having handled more than one million tonnes. To secure future growth, the projects initiated by Süderelbe AG ranges, inter alia, from a joint marketing concept on the development of port services to joint bids. Crucial to future development, however, will be the expansion of the ship lift Scharnebeck. All ports have a direct rail links, but still require more investments into infrastructure investment to fully realise their growth potential.

In late March, the joint Internet portal “”: http: // was launched, showing details on each port and future perspectives.
