Hamburg and Prague Celebrate Double Partnership Jubilee

Not only the both cities, but also the two harbours have been maintaining a fruitful co-operation in the past 25 years

Hamburg’s First Mayor has drawn a very positive summary on his wo-day trip to Prague in mid-October. Visiting Prague on occasion of the 25-year anniversary of twinning with the Czech capital, Scholz discussed a wide selection of topics with high-ranking politicians in Prague, ranging from urban development and port management, to Hamburg’s bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Germany’s dual vocational training system.
With his journey of the First Mayor, Scholz accepted an invitation of Primátorin of Prague, Adriana Krnáčová and paid a return visit. The Primátorin visited Hamburg in June 2015 to attend the 25-year anniversary celebrations.

A Role Model: the German Dual System

Since the signing of the joint education agreement in 2009, the close co-operation of school education has been steadily intensified. Scholz thus also talked to the Vice Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, Jaroslav Fidrmuc. The Czech Republic is interested in the possibilities offered by the German system of dual vocational training. Other topics included the existing exchanges of students and teachers and school partnerships. As part of the teaching programme of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, teachers are sent to Prague on a regular basis. Also on the agenda were talks with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Jakub Kulhánek, the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, Jan Mládek, and the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, Jan Hamáček.

Hamburg – the Czech Republic’s main port

Hamburg is a major trading partners of the Czech Republic and the most important transshipment port for Czechia’s foreign trade. In 2014, around 60 per cent of the Czech overseas trade was handled by Hamburg, i.e. some 450,000 containers. Last year, goods worth some 520 million euro were exported from Hamburg to the Czech Republic. Imports amounted to more than 800 million euro. Almost 500 Hamburg companies trade with the Czech Republic, of which more than 100 companies are present in the Czech Republic with subsidiaries.

Port of Hamburg Evening in Prague

In the evening, Scholz took part in the traditional harbour evening hosted by the Port of Hamburg Marketing. In his speech to the approximately 300 invited guests, Scholz stressed that the success of economic co-operation depended to a large extent on the good work of the Port of Hamburg office, which has also been active in Prague for 25 years: “In the 25 years of twinning between Prague Hamburg, our network developed into deeply rooted friendships and solid economic ties, tightly knit, reliable and sustainable. Its figures are impressive. We can draw a very positive balance, and I am sure that this will continue.”
