Semi-trailers can be used on both roads and railways in future now that compatibility between pocket wagons, a freight wagon specially designed for transporting such trailers, and semi-trailers for a smooth transport chain have been improved as part of the “Future Trailer for road and rail” project. Some 15 measures were developed based on requirements for freight transport. They contain recommendations for improving and adjusting the semi-trailer, the pocket wagon and the infrastructure.
Innovative solutions for the market
Due to the increased requirements of road freight transport, the Future Trailer project has boosted networking between the individual modes of transport significantly. Karl Fischer, Managing Director of LKZ Prien GmbH, said: “With the Future Trailer, a standard loading unit has been further developed to be rail-compatible so that a decision can be made in future to use the semi-trailer flexibly on road or rail. Smooth freight transport in the future can only succeed, if all those involved work along the transport chain.”
A project team consisting of the three largest European semi-trailer manufacturers Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone GmbH & Co. KG, Schmitz Cargobull AG and Wilhelm Schwarzmüller GmbH as well as one of Europe’s largest transport companies for rail freight transport, TX Logistik AG came together with the initiators of the project, Zitzlsperger Spedition & Logistik GmbH & Co. KG and LKZ Prien GmbH.
