Cruise year 2016 begins

160 ship calls are expected in the port of Hamburg. Cruise Gate Hamburg expects a new passenger record

Two famous ships will ring in this year’s cruise ship season when they dock in the Port of Hamburg on Friday. Just a week after ringing in the New Year, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria, owned by the British-American Cunard Line, will arrive in the Altona and HafenCity terminals. A total of 160 visits from 33 different ships have been announced for this year, including 27 double port calls as part of the port anniversary from May 5-8, 2016, one quadruple port call and one quintuple port call.

One million cruise ship passengers

Although only four more ships’ visits than 2015 with 160 port visits have been announced for 2016, the number of expected cruise ship guests is far higher. In 2015, around 525,000 passengers arrived in the port of Hamburg while 640,000 are expected this year. “The strong growth of 26 per cent plus is due to the fact that we are expecting more port calls by ships with larger capacities than hitherto”, said Sacha Rougier, Manager of Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH, the operator of Hamburg’s three cruise ship terminals, on In the daily Hamburger Abendblatt, she revealed that 1 million cruise ship passengers are due to visit the Hanseatic city in 2018, adding: “In 2017, we will cross the 700,000 passenger mark in the terminals.”

Hamburg’s economy is definitely profiting from the development of cruise shipping. Today, over 1,500 jobs are dependent on the sector and contribute to around EUR270 million in added value per year.
