Another 20 cargo bikes for StadtRad's fleet

Electric cargo bikes in rental bike fleet - Hamburg Airport to connect up to network

Around 20 electric cargo bikes have been added to the StadtRad rental bike system amid plans to bring the number of stations to 350 and to 4,500 bikes over the next ten years. Launched on Saturday (April 6, 2019), consumers can now use the new bicycles to transport the weekend shop or to take the children to the park. The new bikes come after Deutsche Bahn won a tender issued by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg for the continued operation of StadtRad Hamburg 2.0 from February 1, 2019. Electric cargo bikes are now being offered for the first time in Germany. The fleet presently has a total of 2,630 bikes.

Loads of up 60 kilogrammes

The electric cargo bikes can transport up to 60 kilogrammes and have a fold-out bench with adjustable safety belts with space for a two-year-old and a seven-year-old child. Similar to other StadtRad bikes, the first 30 minutes are free of charge. However, unlike other city bikes, the electric cargo bikes must be returned to the station from which they were borrowed and are automatically charged there. The charging status is shown on the app and on the bike’s display.

Hamburg’s ambitious bicycle traffic plans

The City of Hamburg is going to great efforts in terms of cycling this year. Andreas Rieckhof, State Councillor, noted: “The cycle route network, the construction and renewal of the cycle traffic network, the expansion of Bike+Ride, the implementation of the safety campaign for cyclists and, of course, the StadtRad system are good examples.” And Hamburg Airport will soon become the first German airport to provide a StadtRad service, the company said.
