Whereas mail order and online sales rose substantially by 6.9 per cent in Hamburg last year, the high-street retail trade showed significantly lower growth of 0.3 per cent. The sector is undergoing structural change. Hamburg-based business is developing its very own responses to this: Traditional mail order company Otto is building a bridge between online and offline sales using the platform Stocksquare. Meanwhile, fashion outlet Bonprix is combining the advantages of the high-street trader in Hamburg’s inner city with internet shopping – via app. Brigitte Nolte, head of the Hamburg branch of Handelsverband Nord (Northern German Commerce Association), reports that the innovative solutions of startups here are characterized by sustainable ideas.
