The world’s most powerful X-ray laser opened two years ago at the European XFEL in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. The 3.4 km long laser extends from Hamburg to Schleswig-Holstein and generates extremely bright and ultra-short laser flashes 27,000 times per second. The underground experimental area provides space for international research groups to decipher the atomic details of viruses, investigate processes such as those inside planets or to examine materials under extreme conditions. A total of 12 countries have a share in the non-profit research institution. Plans for a visitor centre with an exhibition have recently been announced to make the technology accessible to the public. Talks with companies are crucial, said Antonio Bonucci, an engineer and director of the “Industrial Liaison Office” where Hamburg News went behind the scenes.
