The tale of Wacken, a village in Schleswig-Holstein, might have been along the lines of “Once upon a time there was a village…” Yet, the village in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region has long since become a Mecca for tens of thousands of metal fans worldwide arriving for the annual Wacken Open Air (W:O:A)festival. The 2,000 strong village is expecting its numbers to swell when around 100,000 heavy metal fans descend on the place from August 1-3, 2019. However, not all the villagers liked the influx at first. Meanwhile, the event has become an important economic (pull) factor. Around 19,000 visitors are arriving from all corners of the globe e.g. Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, Mexico, the United States, Peru and Israel especially for the metal fest, said Hamburg Airport.
