Hamburg is considered the world’s third-largest aviation centre with over 41,000 employees in around 300 companies and institutions, according to recent study by the VDI/VDE Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit) and the Hamburg Aviation cluster. Apart from giants like Airbus, Lufthansa Technik and Hamburg Airport, research institutes, start-ups and universities also help drive the industry ahead. An Airbus aircraft “Made in Hamburg” takes off or lands every two seconds across the globe. The number of innovations is also high. German aerospace companies invest around EUR 181,000 per employee in research and development – almost 20 per cent higher than the overall economic average.
