The FAMOS project brought aviation companies together at ZAL to develop a system for using robotic arms to coat airliner wings with a “sharkskin” texture and ultimately lower fuel consumption. Lufthansa Technik and Airbus have been conducting joint research on these and other issues at the ZAL TechCenter since 2014. This latest has success is modelled on nature, reduces airflow resistance and the “riblet” structure can reduce an aircraft’s fuel consumption.
