Germany’s first artistic virtual reality festival, VRHAM! gets underway in Hamburg’s Oberhafenquartier on June 7-17, 2018. Visitors will have an opportunity to discover, experience, discuss and understand the relatively new art form of virtual reality. Several individual and group events as well as live performances will also be held. An international jury will present the EUR 5,000 VRHAMMY AWARD to the best experience of the festival and the HH Emerging Artist Residency Award for the best young artist. An audience award will also be presented at the big closing party on June 17.
Joint VR experiences
The main programme focuses on “home deals” with flight and home while “Shift” goes on a journey into the self. Sixteen VR experiences by international artists will also be shown. VRHAM Live presents innovative VR art in theatre, music and painting and will also make joint VR experiences possible. As part of the Rising Stars programme, aspiring Hamburg-based VR artists will be given an opportunity to present their work at the Grand Opening on June 8, 2018 at VRHAM Space. A talk will also focus on what virtual reality can change and the impact on VR itself. Various conferences and workshops are also on the agenda.
Place for new experiences
Ulrich Schrauth, initiator and artistic director of the VRHAM!, said: “We want to establish VR art as an independent art form with this new festival and set up a platform to create and develop the genre for artists. VR is a medium that opens up entirely new perspectives on art and our lives. The focus is always on people. We want to overcome inhibitions and take the visitors by the hand. VRHAM is a friendly place that offers a new experience. No dogma, no drama. A place for everybody.”
