The first ever Future Hamburg Award was presented Wednesday (May 8, 2019) during the Online Marketing Rockstars (OMR) festival. First prize went to the Lisbon-based Heptasense Lda. followed by Hamburg’s LignoPure in second place while the London-based Humanising Autonomy secured third prize. The winning teams receive a tailor-made coaching and support programme in Hamburg as well as access to one of Europe’s most vibrant start-up ecosystems.

The winners outperformed more than 100 contestants from all corners of the globe and won over the jury with their forward-looking products and business models. Heptasense Lda provides software for surveillance cameras that is capable of detecting suspicious and criminal behaviour and alerting security teams. For privacy purposes, only physical behaviour patterns are scanned and without facial recognition.
LignoPure offers natural, biodegradable lignin-based solutions for products as an alternative to oil-based industrial products such as plastic micro beads. The company targets the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries and hopes to develop sustainable solutions with stakeholders. LignoPure is a spin-off of the Technical University Hamburg and consists of a multidisciplinary team with expertise in process engineering, product development and business administration.
Humanising Autonomy investigates data using artificial intelligence. It aims to improve the safety and efficiency of autonomous vehicles by understanding and predicting human behaviour in urban areas. The company also hopes to develop a global standard for artificial intelligence.
Signal to start-ups worldwide
Launched by Hamburg Invest’s Startup Unit and Hamburg Marketing, the new international awards and support progamme were presented for the first time this year. Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, CEO of Hamburg Marketing GmbH, noted: “The Future Hamburg Award is a unique platform for young companies to further develop their groundbreaking business models. Hamburg is one of the best places in Europe for innovative start-ups because hardly any other place offers such a density of important future technologies.” He added: “Many international corporations appreciate Hamburg for launching their new products or services. We want international start-ups to profit even more from these advantages. The new support programme is our signal to start-ups all over the world to keep Hamburg as an option in mind.”
