The Hamburg Ministry of Culture and Media is funding smaller Hamburg music labels with grants of EUR 3,000 to 10,000 this year, a press release said in February. Around 250 works in diverse music genres including newcomer projects and releases by established artists have benefited since the special funding was launched in 2010.
Hamburg as a city of music
The funds benefit smaller Hamburg labels that take an entrepreneurial risk in terms of artistic developments. The monies allow them to produce works that would probably not be commercially feasible otherwise. “But precisely these contribute to the creative diversity of the scene and are of immense importance for Hamburg as a city of music,” said Dr. Casten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. “The label promotion ensures greater visibility here and thus more (music) culture at the same time – so that the label ‘Music from Hamburg’ can continue to be associated with quality and diversity”.
First application phase now open
The funding is aimed at so-called micro-enterprises with a registered office or branch in Hamburg and regardless of name recognition. The funds can be put towards production and marketing processes. Applications for the first application phase can be submitted from February 19 until the deadline of March 26, 2019. A second application phase for other projects will start from June 25 to August 28, 2019.
