Literaturhaus Hamburg: 25 years

150 events each year: readings, discussions, and literary evenings. New talents supported by literary laboratory.

Read, listen, discuss, and relish: almost as famous as the Literaturhaus Hamburg are the brunches that visitors are able to enjoy at Hamburg’s house of literature. Located in a white mansions at Schwanenwik, right opposite the banks of the blue Alster lake dotted with sail boats, the heritage villa has been celebrating the written word for 25 years in autumn. Officially opened in 1989, it has been showcasing the diversity of literature with 150 events each year, ranging from readings and panel discussions to philosophical cafés, and mixed-double series. New talent is being supported by a so-called “Schreiblabor”, a writing lab. A book stall in the passage, the mansion is also home to Mercier & Camier, and thus one of the city’s most gorgeous decors for coffee, lunch, or dinner with an elaborately adorned café where angels are looking down from the ceiling while sipping a latte or feasting on a “Hamburg Menu”.
