Hamburg Start-Ups Wanted For "German Startup Engine“

Interested to pitch for Hamburg at SXSW Interactive? Application period closes 8 January 2015

From 13-22 March 2015, Texas will once again be the global hotspot and meeting place for the world’s creative industries, with South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) held in Austin. During the festival, both the fourth and sixth floors of the Hilton Austin Downtown will be converted into a Startup Village, beaming and humming with panels, meet ups, special events, lounges and activations.

SXSW Accelerator Startup Competition

Startup Village will also the home of SXSW Accelerator startup competition. For the first time, Germany will be part of the Startup Village, presenting the “German Startup Engine” with one panel and two pitches on Sunday, 15 March. The two pitches will be held in the two categories “E-Commerce” and “Travel & Mobility” in front of an international jury of experts. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Reeperbahn Festival are inviting Hamburg-based startups to register for the contest until 8 January 2015 and to present their project in Austin in the two categories along with four other German Startups. Thanks to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and partners, such es EY, the winners will receive support for their travel costs.

Pre-Pitch To Select Candidates

In order to find the suitable candidates, a selected few will be invited to present their projects at a Pre-Pitch at betahaus in Hamburg on January 13th. There, a professional jury of six experts from Hamburg’s start-up sector will decide live, which candidates will present the German start-up landscape at SXSW in Austin. The Pre-Pitch will be organised by and supported by the auditing firm EY. The joint Hamburg presentation at SXSW is financially supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and mainly organised by the Interessengemeinschaft Hamburger Musikwirtschaft (IHM) and Reeperbahn Festival.

SXSW Austin Texas

Each spring, the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) is held in Austin, Texas. Launched in 1987 as a pure music festival, SXSW developed into the world’s most important trade fair for the digital creative industries. Hamburg has been present for many years, and participated at 2014’s with 70 companies, and thus the largest delegation. Travelling to Austin, the Hamburg-based company from the three sectors of music, interactive, and film are all receiving on-site support by Hamburg in their activities to achieve the common goal: to promote the Hamburg’s creative industry and players.

Sponsors of the joint Hamburg joint presentation include the Senate Chancellery of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Hamburg Marketing GmbH, Hamburg Convention Bureau GmbH, Hamburg Ministry of Culture, and the civic promotor of the city’s creative industries, Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft. Responsible for the organisation of Hamburg’s participation are the music initiative Interessengemeinschaft Hamburger Musikwirtschaft (IHM) and the Reeperbahn Festival.

Germany is showcasing its creative industry industries by a comprehensive programme with three main sections, a joint booth, and the “German House” in the Rainey Street.
