Gruner + Jahr Celebrate 50-Year Anniversary

On 30 June, the Hamburg magazine publisher Gruner + Jahr (G+) launches a social media campaign reviving its history on occasion of its 50-year jubilee

Strawberry cake and champagne will be awaiting the staff of the Gruner + Jahr publishing house today on occasion of the company’s 50-year jubilee. The same menu had been also served half a century ago, when Richard Gruner, John Jahr and Gerd Bucerius founded the European publishing house by signing respective contracts. The signature took place on 30 June 1965 in the garden of Jahr’s mansion in Hamburg. The very next day, G + J started operations as a printing and publishing house. In the following decades, the publishing house became one of the world’s leading magazine publishers with magazines.

Social Media Campaign to Highlight Publishing History

On occasion of the anniversary, G + J launched a social media campaign: under the hashtag #grunerjahrzehnte, the publishing house posted some 200 tweets, show entertaining, interesting and remarkable facts from the publishing history. “50 years of Gruner + Jahr “ stands for 50 years of excellence texts, great stories, the best photos, funny, crazy and sad moments . “The tweets fit like pieces of a puzzle to form an overall picture that not only recalls corporate history, also reflects the development of society in the past fifty years, and how it influenced media and was influenced by them”, explains Julia Jäkel, CEO of G+J.

Senate Reception at City Hall

To thank Gruner + Jahr for fifty years in Hamburg, the city’s First Mayor Olaf Scholz will host a Senate reception for G + J a city hall. 400 guests from the media, politics, business and society have been invited to attend the event, including former and current managers, partners and friends of the company.
